Polished Concrete Renovations Albury Wodonga
Turn your existing slab into a spectacular finished floor.
Turn your existing slab into a spectacular finished floor.
Spec Floors has been polishing concrete in existing homes and buildings across Albury Wodonga, North East Victoria and Southern NSW for over 20 years. If you’ve got concrete under those tiles, that carpet or that old vinyl, there’s a good chance it can be turned into something you’ll love.
Every renovation starts with a site inspection. We’ll look at the slab condition, identify anything that needs repairing or removing first, and walk you through what to expect. Once the site is ready, we work through the following in a single stage:
Machine access, dust protection and exclusive site access are all essential to getting a quality result.
Polish after demolition is done but before new fixtures go in. All areas being polished need to be completed at the same time.
Before we arrive:
During the works:
After handover: Other trades can return the next day. The builder is responsible for floor protection through the rest of the build.
Renovating with polished concrete raises a few questions that new builds don’t. Here are the ones we get asked most often.
Honestly, we won’t know exactly until we start grinding. Every existing slab is different and most weren’t poured with polishing in mind. We typically remove 3-5mm to flatten and prepare the surface, which means natural variation in aggregate size and colour is part of the result. Some areas will show more stone than others — and that variation is genuinely part of what people love about polished concrete in older homes.
Where previous floor coverings have been removed, things like old grout lines or adhesive ghosting can sometimes show through. We’ll always be upfront about what’s likely before we start. If you want to see what your slab looks like beforehand, ask us about a sample grind during the inspection.
Zero exposure note: older slabs rarely achieve a perfectly even creamy finish. Even small height differences can reveal aggregate. If a uniform zero exposure look is critical, we’ll discuss this during the inspection and suggest alternatives if your slab isn’t suited to it.
Different concrete pours in the one slab can actually add character and give your floor a quality you won’t find anywhere else.
It’s possible but complicated. Falls to drains, setdowns and waterproofing details are typically set at the original pour, which means renovating wet areas involves more variables than the rest of the floor.
We don’t design, certify or approve waterproofing. Any wet area works need assessment and sign-off from a qualified engineer or building inspector before polishing can proceed. Once that’s sorted, we’ll coordinate timing with your builder.
Where MPC isn’t the right fit for a bathroom, we’ll suggest alternatives that sit well alongside polished concrete in the rest of the home.
Grinding 3-5mm off the surface changes where the polished concrete meets tiles, timber or other finishes. Plan for transition trims or wedges and check door clearances and skirting heights once your old coverings are off.
Edges and corners are finished with hand tools, so small unpolished triangles in tight internal corners are a normal part of the process.
No. For safety and quality we need exclusive site access and the property to be vacant during polishing. Grinding generates significant dust and noise, and our machinery needs clear, unobstructed access throughout.
It happens, and we’ll always be straight with you about it. When MPC isn’t the right call we’ll recommend something better suited:
