Mechanical polished concrete

Polished concrete is a term often used for a variety of floor surfaces, Mechanical Polished concrete, or ‘proper’ polished concrete is our premium product that we deliver that utilises the concrete itself as the wear surface as opposed to a coating system that is often incorrectly referred to as polished concrete.

Polished concrete uses the thermal mass of the slab to provide a comfortable under-foot experience. As the concrete slab naturally draws its temperature from the ground rather than the outside temperature it tends to be warmer than tiles in winter and cooler than tiles in summer. Floor heating can be installed for extra warmth in winter to give a luxurious element to your polished concrete.

Concrete Grind and Seal

Grind and Seal is the industry term for concrete which has a clear coating system installed. It has often been called polished concrete or simply a coating system. As there is significant difference between a coating system and polished concrete it is important to understand the difference. There are also some big differences in grind and seal systems and options. If correctly chosen a grind and seal is suitable for homes, showrooms, retail outlets, factories and commercial properties.

Grind and Seal is a system by which the concrete is ground for exposure and to remove as many scratches as possible. A clear topical sealer is used to give the concrete its protection, wearing surface and shine. There are many options for the specific coating that is used and that will largely depend on the desired look and functionality required of the floor.

The advantage with a grind and seal concrete system over other systems is that;

Initial installation coats are comparably low
Beading or grit can be added to enhance slip resistance
Not as reliant on concrete quality to achieve consistent gloss level
As long as the concrete has been poured correctly there are options for exposure levels
High gloss or satin options available for indoor systems
Outdoor options of UV satin finish polished concrete or an etched and sealed system.

Speciality Coatings

Depending on the look you are after, the environment the floor is in and the condition of the concrete sometimes it is inspiring to look at what can be achieved with epoxy or coloured floor coatings. The advantage of solid coloured floors is that they can provide consistent flooring that is dust free, seam free, hard wearing, hypoallergenic with easy cleaning without being reliant on the concrete colour, condition or initial installation.
